What is a good resource to learn internet marketing?
I’m looking to start an online business and want to learn more about internet marketing, what’s a good resource for this?
This is a great question and one that’s often asked. While there are TONS of resources online stick with reputable programs. Sure you can learn stuff from people who say they’re experts but they may teach methods that are considered ‘blackhat’ (tactics that the search engines may penalize you for).
A highly recommended program is from the University of San Francisco who offers Internet marketing training. Here’s the link to the list of courses that are available.

For more recommendations on this course check out LinkedIn and there’s usually people talking about the program.
Good luck!

how do search engine marketing firms make money?
Search Engine Marketing Firms
Confusing question because there are two different things at play. One is the search engine itself and the second is a search engine marketing firm.
There are two ways to get appear high on search engines – one is with pay-per-click advertising where Corporation B and Corporation C bid against each other for first paid listing of a given key word.
How search engine marketing works?
When customer F searches for “keyword” and corporation B comes up first, if customer f clicks through to corporation b’s website, then the search engine gets paid whatever the bidding rate is.
Search Engine marketing firms make money by helping companies with search engine optimization.
Search Engine Marketing Firm A contacts corporation B. corporation B hires SE Firm A to rewrite their Website in such a way that search engine robots, spiders, and crawlers come back to corporation b’s web site and pick up key words and index them in their search engines. SE Firm A will also rewrite the key words and meta data for corporation B – again so that the search engines index the pages.
Be careful with search engine marketing firms!
Be careful with search engine marketing firms that make you promises regarding organic (Not pay-per-click) positioning. The search engines themselves change their search algorithims frequently to avoid people trying to scam the system. There are plenty of not-very-ethical search engine marketing firms who will promise you the world. They sometimes use means that could get your site kicked out of the search engine all together.
I hope that helped and didn’t make it more confusing.

Can Social Media Marketing replace Search Engine Marketing as a viable way for companies to market online?
Search Engine Marketing Techniques
I “Stumbled Upon” www.FtheBigThree.com which does a good job of showing the opportunities that could be available for marketers in the “Social Media” category. Not completely sold yet on it but kinda warming up to it. I guess I’ll have to start learning Social Media Marketing (SMM) to go along with my Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and SEO. So, many abbreviations….so little time.
NO — they can work hand in hand, but social media marketing cannot replace search engine marketing
Significance of Search Engine Marketing
Search engine’s usage is far way more than social media use. Plus traffic from search engines are more sustainable and longer term, while social media traffic is more sporadic.
If you get a top placement for a keyword in Google, for example, you can expect that to continuously give you traffic until someone else topples you from the top spot — and that is not always easy to do unless you made a huge mistake or the search engines changed their algorithm.
You can get a huge burst of traffic from social media sites such as Digg — only if your link is in the homepage. Once your link is pushed to the archives, traffic dries up.
Relevance of Search Engine Marketing
Social media sites depend on the FRESHNESS of the information, while search engine sites depend on the RELEVANCE of the site to the search query and that gives an edge to older pages
For a savvy marketer, he/she needs to utilize and maximize both venues to get the most traffic. The two should work hand in hand, and not one over the other. The power of search engine marketing.
